A new study published in JAMA is certainly worth paying attention to. Researchers pulled data on half a million people, and found that drinking any amount of coffee was linked to a longer lifespan. According to the study, drinking a daily cup of coffee may lower your risk of early death by 8%. Enjoy your A.M. ritual, Cynthia Sass writes on Health.com.
Throw out the artificial sweeteners
Although they may be calorie-free, research shows that artificial sweeteners kick up cravings. Additionally, they are linked to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. If you need sugar, try using a small amount of real sugar as an alternative.
Start with a cup of water
Caffeine has been considered a diuretic by experts and consumers for years. Some research has shown that caffeine intake can also affect our fluid balance. Try drinking at least eight ounces of water when you wake up and continuously stay hydrated throughout the day.
Pour grass-fed dairy or plant-based milk
If you choose to drink milk or cream with your coffee, choose grass-fed and organic milk or cream. Grass-fed and organic dairy contains more nutrients.
Plant-based milks and creamers such as coconut, almond, cashew and oat are available at all supermarkets and coffee shops. These are much lower in calories than dairy creamers and are often all-natural.
Add spices to your coffee
Saving calories can often be accomplished with a little creativity. I personally love adding cinnamon to my coffee. It is a great alternative to sugar in addition to ginger, nutmeg and cloves. Spices increase your antioxidant intake.
